Himeji Castle (姫路城, Himejijō) is also known as the White Heron Castle (Shirasagijo) due to its elegant, white appearance. and is both a Japanese National Treasure and a World Heritage site. Its status as one of Japan’s 12 remaining original castles (Unlike many other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire and survives) makes this fortress a must for anyone interested the history of Japan.
A little bit of history
Himeji Castle is over 400 years old. Chosen as a strategic defense point to the west of Kyoto, the first set of fortifications was built sometime in the 1400s. Himeji castle, as it stands today, was completed built in 1609 by Terumasa Ikeda, who was married to Tokuhime, the second daughter of Ieyasu Tokugawa.

The Main Tower - "Tenshu"
The main highlight of Himeji Castle is the Daitenshu, the highest tower in the castle complex. The Daitenshu has an interconnected structure, and boasts a five-tiered structure that has one basement floor and six floors above ground.

Popular Season to visit
Himeji castle is ranked in top 100 spots to view Cherry blossom (sakura) in Japan. 1,000 cherry blossom trees are planted at the ground of the main keep, along the wall and moats and the west garden. We visited in early summer, so it was the green season. We do plan to visit there in spring also.
Access
Himeji Castle stands about 15-20 minute walk from north exit of Himeji Station. There also a bus option which costs ¥100 yen for one way.
