Mount Asahidake

Mt. Asahidake (旭岳) is located in Higashikawa, Hokkaido. It is tallest mountain in the Hokkaido, and a part of Daisetsuzan National Park.
The altitude of Asahidake is 2,291m, and has been designated as an active volcano by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Best Season to Hike

The mountain is popular with hikers in the summer and autumn (which starts at the most earliest time, in mid of September) and can be easily reached from Asahidake Onsen via Asahidake Ropeway. 
At winter the mountain becomes paradise for sky and snowboard users.

Options Routes

There are few hiking opportunities in Asahidake.

Mt.Asahidake has a ropeway that can be used.
Most of the people start hiking from the ropeway which the last destination arrives to 1600m of the mountain

1. For beginners, there is an attractive, 30-60 minute circular trail (1.7km) around the ropeway’s upper station, which passes some ponds and sulfurous vents

2. For people who want more to experience, you can choose the route to the summit of the mountain from the ropeway last station.
It is about 5.31km and will take about 5 hours.

3.For the experienced, you can skip the use of the ropeway and start the climbing from the start.
It will be about 12.36km and will take about 9-9.5 hours.

When we arrived we did the circular route and it was absolutely beautiful.

Wildlife

At the mountain route you can see many animals.
such as, squirrels, pikas, bears, foxes and if you are lucky enough you can meet even stoats.

6:00-17:30 (May be different in season so please check before going)

Admission:
Round trip for ropeway
Oct.21 to May.31 – ¥2,200 
Jun.1 to Oct.20 – ¥3,200

Access:
You can use bus from Asahikawa Station to Asahidake which takes about 1hour 40 min, and costs ¥1,800.
There only 4 times a day bus so please check before going to make sure the schedule.
We used rental car.
